RUGBY FOOTBALL

Matches in Hastings

Although the Rugby football season is drawing to a close, the winner of the senior championship is still in doubt. At Nelson Park, Hastings, on Saturday afternoon a further series will be decided and also the final of the fourth grade championship. The early games will see Celtic and H. juniors in action, and if Celtic are victorious, they look like the winners of the Hastings section. The other early game is the final of the fourth grade championship between Tech. Old Boys and Hastings. The main game is between H.H.5.0.8. and Havelock. These two teams play the open game and should give a good exhibition. On No. 2 ground Hastings and Eskview will try conclusions. It will be remembered that in the first round Eskview unexpectedly defeated Hastings, and the return match should prove very interesting. THE CELTIC TEAM The following 'team will represent Celtic v. Tech. 0.8. at Napier on Saturday:—Simon, Bennett (2), Evans, Rose, McKenzie, Geddes, Thompson, Hannigan, James, Cunningham. Hinton. Large, MeKennie, Hassett, Bergren. McArthur, Brigden. Bus leaves P.O. at I. MATCHES IN NAPIER A most interesting position exists in connection with the senior Rugby championship. Technical Old Boys head the list with 23 points, followed by Marist 8.0.8 , and Hastings H. 5.0.8. with 22 points, and Hastings with 21. The two latter teams have, however, played 16 games to the other two teams’ 15 games. To-morrow’s games may help to define more clearly the probable winner, but on the other hand they may complicate the position still further. Technical Old Boys meet Celtic at McLean Park No. 1 and Tech, on form should win. Alarists meet Napier H. 5.0.8. and it is not easy to pick the winner. If Tech, "in and Marist lose, that should just about settle the championship. If both lose to-morrow, or if Marists win and Tech, lose, it opens a field tor unbounded speculation as to the ultimate champion team. Great interest therefore centres in tomorrpw’s contests at McLean Park. The Marist versus Napier H. 5.0.8. game commences at 1.45 p.m. An important lower grade game is the third grade final, Napier section, between Tech, and Pirates. These teams have already played three drawn games. Both are level in championship points, and to-morrow they must settle the question as to which is the better team. -
