OBITUARY

Sir John Roberts

The death occurred this evening after a brief illness of Sir John Roberts in his 89th year. Sir John was born at Selkirk, Scotland, on October 30, 1845, aud went to Australia in 1864 to study station management and the wool business. He camo to Dunedin in 1868 when the well-known firm of Murray, Roberts and Co. Was established in this city.

Sir John was prominently identified with the progress of the city and province since his arrival. He was elected Mayor unopposed in 1889, and in 1891 had the honour of the Companion of St. Michael and St. George conferred on him. In 1920 the additional honour of knighthood was conferred <n him. Ho was a director on the Fninn Steamship Co., and several other leading firms in the city.
