More Wages Asked For APPRENTICES’ CLAUSE (By T» learrapli-Preue Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 22. An application by workers for increased wages and shorter hours was made m the clothing industry Dominion dispute heard in the Conciliation Council to-day. The employees asked for a dll-hour week, and the employers for 44. I hero was considerable discussion over apprentices. The employers wished to do away with the clause affecting them, contending that in the event of slackness of trade journeymen would have to bo put off, but under the proposed conditions apprentices have to be kept on, which would be unfair. The employees contended that apprentices were entitled to some protection and security . Il was stated that the whole dispute virtually centred round the apprentices’ clause, which would be discussed again this afternoon. 'rhe employees also asked lor an allround increase of approximately 2/6 a week- for junior workers up to the third year.
