USES OF FLAX
Polish Women’s Work New fields of employment are being opened up for Poland’s peasantry by varied extension of the uses of flax and hemp. This was shown at Warsaw at an exhibition of woven and spun goods opened by President Moscicki. All over Poland and particularly in the east and north-east the women weave and spin, and these homespun articles have a considerable artistic value. The designs have been handed down from generation to genration. In almost every peasant cottage there is a spinning wheel or hand loom, and as in olden times the evenings are often spent in company where, to the hum of the wheel, a song is intoned, a newspaper read aloud, or a discussion carried on.
The fashion of wearing homespun articles has caught on, and at the exhibition there have been seen costumes of linen, blouses, embroideries, besides articles for tabic use.
Mme. Marya Laszkiewics: produces beautiful mgs of original design and colours, made of hemp. These inexpensive rugs are expected to prove an outstanding success for export abroad.
So varied were the articles on view that an impression was gained that almost everything can be made of linen.
