Taranaki Union’s Challenge DEFERRED BY H.B. UNION The Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union has again deferred until its meeting on Friday nex: the question of whether it will accept Taranaki’s challenge for the Banfurly Shield. A challenge from Waikato was declined. lhese decisions were reached by the union s management committee* last night following the receipt of advice from the New Zealand union that the We* Zealand iilteen t 0 play the All Blacks would be selected on August 22. Tho New Zealand Rugby Union advised xn regard to questions submitted to it by the Hawke s Bay union as to the acceptance of shield challenges: the New Zealand union does not think that there should be any question of compulsion about tho playing of any match, but as to whether your union should defend the shield this season, the committee of the New Zealand union is of the opinion that you should accept challenges this year.” the New Zealand union also advised that tho second New Zealand fifteen to meet tho team now in Australia would be selected on August 22. The committee briefly discussed the matter. Mr B. Tweedie moved that the Taranaki challenge should be accepted. Mr N. A. McKenzie, however, moved an amendment that consideration of the challenge should be deferred until next Friday. The amendment was carried.

The Hastings Rugby Sub-Union applied for the playing of the Taranaki match at Hastings. Following a discussion in wnich members pointed out that there were not sufficient facilities in Hastings, it wan deckled on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Tweedie, that the application should bo declined, and that, the committee should point out to the subunion that the ground for flic decision was the want of facilities and accommodation at Nelson Park. Mr Tweedie said he thought Hastings could feel assured that it would bo able to have at least one shield match next season.

Mr Norrie expressed the hope that the decision would help to bring before tho authorities the need for facilities and accommodation at the Hastings ground. Taupo ?s to be offered a match at Napier with a Napier junior team op September 15.
