TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

LITEBAEY AND PLAY-READING CIRCLE. The monthly meeting of the Literary and Play-reading Circle of the Hastings Townswomen’s Guild was held in St. Andrew’s Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon, Miss Strang, circle-leader, presiding. After the singing of the National Anthem, a welcome was extended to new members and friends, and apologies for absence were received from members unable to be present. Miss Strang then called upon Mrs. Bridgman, from Havelock North, to address the meeting. She chose as her subject, “A Day out of the Life of George Eliot,’ and gave a wonderfully direct and interesting talk on the life and works of this gifted woman, afterwards reading short extracts from “The Mill on the Floss” and “Silas Marner” and showing many little coloured prints of characters or scenes from these works. Mrs. Eiley, Nelson street, was the next speaker, she, too, receiving a very warm welcome. Her choice was Stanley Baldwin’s introduction to Mary Webb’s well-known book, “Precious Bane,” and the author’s own foreword. This reading was also very attentively listened to, and much enjoyed, and at the close of the meeting all felt that they had spent a very profitable time, a social chat, while partaking of “the cup that cheers” ended a happy afternoon.
