TIKOKINO NOTES

I FEED AFFECTED BY COLD SNAPS SHEEP DOING MELL. From Our Own Correspondent. TIK.OKINO, August 17. Everyone will be glad when the winter is over here—and spring growth has set in properly—as the numerous cold snaps following heavy falls of snow on the Ruahine ranges ami lower hills have made conditions very rough for stock and feeding-out has been the order of the day by those who had prepared for the needs of the season. j Sheep have been doing very well j lately, and twin lambs are very numerous. Tn some cases there have been several triplets. Lucerne and chon moellier are a great standby for either severe winters or droughty seasons. A delightful little party was given by Mr and Mrs Frankish, of ITatuma, at. the residence of Mrs Brooke at Tiko kino last, week in honour of Mrs Frankish’s reice, Miss Rene Brooke, who attained her majority. Those present during the evening were chiefly very old friends and schoolmates of Miss Brooke an.J all enjoyed the function greatly. A beautiful birthday cake was made by Mrs Frankish for tho occasion. The Recent death of Mrs Dudley Hill nee 'Miss Nina Tanner (daughter of tho late Mr and Mrs Thomas Tanner, early pioneers in this district and tlvoriginal owners of The Brow Estate, now part of Argyll Settlement) is de plnred by old friends of the family here. The late Mrs Dudley Hill was held in high esteem for her kindly interest in helping at all. functions which •were arranged for .desirable purposes, and was' always ready from her girllimid to assisl in even good <wi«c. Her

beautiful voieo will never be forgotten or the songs she sang in this district, by those who were so fortunate to have had the pleasure of listening to her. She will be sadly missed by friends all over the province of Hawke’s Bay. and her relatives have the sincere sympathy from all in their sad bereavement. Mrs Hugh McLean, who passed away recently at Waipawa, was a daughter of Mr and Mrs McKay, wdio too were resident in this district in the early days. Mr McKay was .employed as shepherd at the Tikokino end of the late Mr Thomas Tanner’s estate.
