SMASH-AND GRAB RAID

Sydney Thief Caught By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright SYDNEY, August 17. For the second time in two months a smash-and-grab raid was made this afternoon on Angus and Cootc’s jewellery store. A brick was thrown through the window and jewellery valued at £450 taken. The man dashed off through the crowd but was stopped at the point of a revolver by a nearby shopkeeper, after which ho was arrested by two detectives. "You have got me! There are the goods!" Norman Hardy, aged 26, is alleged to have stated to the police officer who arrested him. The police state that the man had a tear-gas pistol, the first ever seen in Sydney. It was loaded with cartridges containing a chemical which, according to the police, could quite easily blind a man.
