A HOLE-IN-ONE

Achievement at Hastings It happened on Saturday at the sixteenth hole of the Hastings Golf Club’s links. “1 think I’ll use this light wood,” said Mr. Doug. McCorkindale, who was playing a practice game with Mr. W. A. Whitloek. Wth a pleasant click the ball sailed off straight for the pit, 150 yards away. It appeared to halt some three feet from the pin and then, as if drawn by a magnet, it rolled on and vanished. Another hole-in-one had been scored. “We’ll be seeing you later,” called one of the two preceding players, whose eyes had casually followed the ball in its history-making flight. At the conclusion of the round, in the confiding atmosphere of the club lounge, Mr. McCorkindale confessed that a hole-in-one made golf very easy. It cut out a lot of bothersome putting. As the achievement was being celebrated in the customary fashion all those present thought the theory thoroughly sound. This is the seventh hole-in-one scored of recent months on tho Hastings links, the distinguished players being: Mrs. A. E. Toothill and Messrs. W. T. Chaplin, W. Matthews, ('» Murfitt, R. H. Plummer, H. Harvey mid McCor. kindale. It is remarkable that for a period of about five years no holes-in-ono were recorded, but the uneventful period was ended last season by Smith, the Akarana professional who placed a “one” to his record while on a visit to Hastings.
