WAKEFIELD FAMILY MEMORIAL
Impressive Cairn Unveiled By Telegraph—Press Association. NELSON, April 2. What, is believed to be the first and only public memorial to any member of the Wakefield family *vas unveiled yesterday on Pa Hill, Riwaka, to the memory of Captain Arthur Wakefield founder of Nelson settlement and the first of the Riwaka settlers. The memorial takes the form of an rmprcssive cairn erected solely by Mr and Mrs Robert Puttie, formerly of Ki waka but now of Richmond. The unveiling ceremony on Mr Pattie’s request wus performed by Mr K. J. noylake. M.P., who is a descenrtant of the pioneer settlers. Mr Pattio has done a great deal to place on record fhe trials and tribulations, heroism and determination of the first settlers, whom he knew when a youth, and now, in his eightieth year, he was determined that he would leave behind some definite memorial to Captain Wakefield and the first satllers.
