FATAL STREET FIGHT
Heavy Fall on Pavement YOUNG MAN ARRESTED By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 2. Following a fight outside a restaurant in Hobson street shortly after 7 o’clock on Saturday night, a man died from head injuries a few minutes after he fell heavily on the pavement. He was Stephen Walter Carter, aged 48, s labourer, of Freeman’s Bay. A waitress in the restaurant said the deceased, accompanied by a native girl, entered the restaurant for a meal shortly before 7 o’clock. A little later two young men entered and sat at the next table. Toward the end of the meal an argument developed between one of the two young men and deceased, who appeared to be acquainted. The discussion became heated and a fight developed outside the restaurant. After the fight had been in progress a few minutes Carter was seen to fall.
It was apparent he was seriously injured. The two young men disappeared Carter was taken to the Auckland Hospital, but he was dead on arrival.
Arrested on Saturday night following the disturbance, Christopher Charles Brown, aged 22, a fish curer, was charged in the Police Court to-day with murdering Stephen Walter Carter. On the application of the police he was remanded to April 9. It is alleged that Carter, who was a labourer, aged 48, and flTrown were fighting, and that in falling on the pavement Carter fractured his skull.
