Runs Ashore oft Suva ATTEMPTS TO REFLOAT FAIL (Received 3, 10.30 a.m.) SUVA, April 3. The Waihemo, leaving Lautoka for Suva, grounded on Sunday morning in a shallow passage. Two attempts to refloat her at high water failed. The Malake and the Derek are standing by. The weather is calm. An attempt last night to refloat the Waihemo with the assistance of the Malake failed, though there was considerable movement of the vessel. The bunkers are now being discharged to lighten her. She is making no water.
The Waihemo is a steel steamer of 5627 tons and she was built at New-castle-on-Tyne in 1919. She has been engaged in the Union Company’s transpacific cargo trade for a number of years carrying cargo from Pacific Coast ports to New Zealand and Australia. On her last visit to Auckland she arrived from Pacific Coast ports on February 18 and sailed two days later for Southern porta and Australia to complete discharge. From Sydney she went to Newcastle to bunker and sailed from there about February 23 for Lautoka, Suva, Nukualofa, Apia and Vancouver.
In June, 1924. the Waihemo ran ashore at Newcastle when leaving that port. She was refloated, little damage being done
