HAVELOCK SPORTS

SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL MEETING LARGE GATHERING PRESENT EVENTS ATTRACT MANY ENTRIES What must have been the largest crowd that has attended a public function for many years gathered on the Domain yesterday on tho occasion of the annual sports of the Havelock North Amateur Athletic Club. The weather was beautifully fine and the track on which the athletic and cycling events were hold was in splendid condition. All events drew largo entries and in the case of the running and cycling in almost every case heats had to be run. With the horse events the entries were in all casqs good, but some were outstanding, in one instance there being 21 competitors and in two other events 13 in each.

All the events, competitions and stalls connected with the sporte, with the exception of the horse events and dog trials, were held on the Domain. The ground proper was at its best and was favourably commented upon by both athletes and cyclists, while the bank from which the spectators watched the races proved ideal for the purpose. Besides giving all an uninterrupted view of the progress of the races from start to finish, tho numerous large trees on tho area provided adequate shade for everyone. Luncheon and morning and afternoon teas were available, as were also ice-creams, soft drinks and confectionery, both stalls being well patronised. A largo number of people took advantage of the picnicking facilities and made the sports a day’s outing. These picnickers’ cars were parked on a section across tho road from the domain and adjoining the field in which tho horse events were held. Hot water was supplied on the ground free of charge and here again those concerned had a word of praise for the manner in which the picnicking arrangements had been organised. The Hastings Citizens’ Band was present throughout the day and played a number of selections, which were greatly appreciated. The band also played for the musical chairs, horse events.

In tho morning a number of children’s athletic races were conducted by some of the club’s officials and provoked much friendly rivalry between the children. Small trophies were given for places in each race and many children took advantage of the opportunity to do thoir best and win a prize. All the officials of the club worked industriously during the day and it. must have been gratifying to them to have had such an outstandingly successful meeting attend their efforts. The club is grateful to Mr H. M. Glazebrook of “Tho Washpool,” Maraekakaho, for acting as judge of the horse events, his awards giving every satisfaction; also Mr J. Taylor, of the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, who acted as results announcer of the athletic and cycling events and gave a commentary during tho running of each race. A dance was held in the Havelock North Village Hall last night as a wind-up to the sports, when there was again a largo attendance and all enjoyed a pleasant evening.
