GOLDEN WINGS
PUZZLED BY “CROSSINGS.” It may be remembered by old-timers that many years ago that great galloper Advance, when sent over to Melbourne among other races, spoiled what looked like a “sure thing” for him by jumping the “crossing” at the junction of the “straight six” with the course proper. According to the following account by a Sydney writer, the crossings were also the undoing a fortnight back of another New Zealand flyer in Golden Wings. In the Newmarket, writes “Poseidon, ’ ’ Golden Wings ran about all over the track. It will be recalled that four days earlier, the New Zealander had galloped up the “straight six” course with A. E. Ellis in the saddle in 1.12 J. Robert Lewis, veteran Victorian jockey, is recognised in Melbourne as a very sound authority on all matters pertaining to racing. If a view he holds is correct any chance Golden Wings had in the Newmarket was forfeited by that otherwise excellent final gallop. The veteran lays down a hard and fast rule with regard to preparing for a Newmarket Handicap. “If you arrive on the scene fairly late,” he says, “and your horse has never been over the straight six furlongs course, it. is dangerous to give him one training run over the crossings. “The reason is obvious. He may fnanage them quite well in the gallop, because he is not expecting them, blit when the actual race comes on he is looking for them, and it is almost certain that he will be upset, by them.” These opinions of Lewis seem to be sound, when the case of Golden Wings is taken, says the Sydney writer. Golden Wings negotiated the crossings Ike an old-stager n hs gallop, but in the race he was plainly upset on arriving at the first crossing. Foursome, winner of the Newmarket, had never raced over the Newmarket Bourse before, and his trainer. Jack Sing, would not allow him to have any gallop over the track prior to the race.
