SWIMMING
THE HERETAUNGA CLUB
Last Week’s Carnival
GREATER INTEREST SHOWN
(By
"Isander.’’
Greater interest is being taken in the activities at the Maddison Baths since the distances of the various swimming events have been lengthened. Every year, at this time of the season, the swimmers are in better condition for longer races, and the club make it a rule to extend the distances of most of the events. The public appreciate this, and with successful handicapping wonderful finishes were witnessed at last Friday's club night.
The junior boys’ event was swum over 75 yards, and it was again pleasing to see more than twenty competitors take the mark. Joe Mclvor succeeded in gaining his third successive victory, and a word of praise is due to him, as his handicap is being ’•educed all the time. This boy is improving every week and must have a chance in the Hogan Cup, which is for the most improved swimmer of the season. Joe hangs on gamely at the finish and is always capable of a little extra energy over the last few yards. F. West, Jnr. looked a “litter” for the final, but he weakened over the last half length. With another season or two this lad will be producing some good times, as he has by far the most beneficial stroke of all the young juniors. Ogg made a reappearance anil swam well till his condition started to let him down. Mohi won his heat in 53 3-ssecs. He has the makings of a real swimmer in a season or two. Frank Sullivan is in great fettle but finds his long handicaps a bit too much. I Mclvor, Sommersby and Metcalf were all left badly on their marks when their starting Humber was called. Metcalf looked a sure winner in his heat, but found the last length too much for him.
The Senior 100 Yards. The senior 100 yards handicap was a. triumph for “Butch.” McDougall, who produced 63 2-ssecs. in both heat and final. Mae has not had over-much swimming of late, but is now producing hia best form. J> Farrell swam his heat in 59 3-ssecs., covering the first 50 yards in 26secs. dead. Farrell seems to be quite capable of smashing his own Hawke’s Bay record of 59 1-5 secs., and should make an attempt before the water cools off. Kelly was swimming a.s well as ever, but for some unknown reason climbed out of the baths at the end of the third length. This was a pity, as a sterling finish was assured between him and Doggett. Plummer did not give the impression of being up to his best form. Doggett swam 65wee- dead, but seemed to make hard work of the whole distance. Dan O’Neill registered 68 3-5 secs., which is an improvement. F. West swam better than he has done for some time and was unfortunate to break his mark. Max de Denne is swimming a very correct stroke and more speed will come later on. The Polo Match. The water polo match was not up to standard. Doggett shmild remember not to swim up the baths so far, thus leaving his opponent unmarked. Farrell gave a fine display of drawing his man and putting him at a disadvantage. Kelly and Sullivan played consistently well.
The standard in all diving contests was high, Geddis and Wright thrilling the public -with difficult dives off both boards.
Mrs Fisher earned applause for beautiful flights and entries. Tn the junior division Lord gave a fine demonstra. tion and dead-heated with Aldridge. Lockyer was not on form, but filled third place. , Junior Boys’ Championship.
Dan O’Neill won the first distance of the Wall Cup, the junior boys’ championship. He beat Frank Sullivan by about two feet in 29 4-ssecs. J. O’Neill again won the B grade 25 yards handicap. Inches only separated the placed swimmers. Ladies’ 50 Yards Event. Miss V. Allen gained a well-deserv-ed victory in the ladies 50 yards event. Misses Joyce Hennah and Molly Hull competed, but showed signs of not having sufficient stroke practice or training. Miss J. Hood again swam well to fill third position. Miss Shaw is improving, but should pay more attention to her arm action.
