BOWLING

THE CHAMPION FOURS Three More Rounds Played

FINALS ON SATURDAY

( By

“Roamer.”

With six rounds completed In the Champion Fours bowling, Hastings and Port Ahuriri are the leading teams, with one loss each. They meet in the seventh round on Saturday, when the final three rounds will be played on the Napier Club’s green

The conditions were all that could be desired last Saturday, when a further three rounds of the Champion Fours contest were played on the Heretaunga green. The playing area was just a trifle holding in the morning, but with the warm sun and a rolling at the luncheon adjournment it played beautifully in the afternoon. The Fourth Round. Some good bowling was witnessed hi the fourth round, and the games on the whole were evenly contested. The surprises of this round were the defeats of Port Ahuriri by Waipukurau, and of Bluff Hill by Heretaunga. The Waipukurau skip (Haldaue) played “a game out of the box.” Time and again he was down ou the head when the skips changed over, but he nearly I always managed to save. It was a i great exhibition. If Haldane can produce the same form against Hastings in the eighth round it will be an interesting match. Heretaunga met Bluff Hill, but the issue was never in doubt and the former won comfortably. Collingo’s team have been showing consistent form. Hastings and Wairere had a good tussle, but the Hastings four were playing that little bit better that makes all the difference between winning and losing. The Havelock four showed good form in the game against Napier, and but for a little bit of bad judgment on the 20th head might have won. They were chasing Napier all through, and on the 20th. bead wanted six to tie. They were lying three nice ones when the skips changed, over, aud Anderson put in another. Engebretsen was a little over the head, but just missed resting on one of the counters. Anderson’s next was a shade narrow and he struck an opposition bowl in front to send it in to shot. Napier won 18—16. Kia Toa, Waipawa and Omarunui had byes. Fifth Round. Hastings started off the fifth round against Kia Toa, and were never bustled to win 25 —16. Kia Toa “killed” head after head in an en deavour to secure eight to tie on the last head, but they were up against a brick wall. Omarunui did not give Bluff Hill any breathers, and it was a hard fight right from the start, with Bluff Hill eventually winning 26 —20. The Port Ahuriri-Napier match was exciting, and the majority of the large number of “bankers” were keenly interested. Napier led over the first half, but Port scored on the last eight heads and scraped home 24—20. Heretaunga met Waipawa, and after a good, even game Heretaunga proved the winners 22 —15. Wairere had a bye.

Sixth Round. Most interest in the sixth round was centred in the Hastings-Napier game. Both fours were in good form, the skips (Parkinson and Engebretsen) bringing off some very nice shots. Play was very even throughout, but Napier managed to run out the winners, 19—16. Wairere were in great form against Heretaunga, who did not play up to their earlier form, and won 32—11. The Port-Kia Toa match was fairly even, with Port being on the right side of the board at the finish. There was not much between Waipawa and Waipukurau, and the scores at the finish were 19—25 in favour of Waipukurau. Omarunui scored an easy win over Havelock North, 24—14. Bluff Hill had a bve.

Champion Pairs. The Champion Pairs contest, will take place on the Havelock North green on Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3. Club secretaries should note that entries close to-morrow (Saturday) night. It is hoped all clubs in the centre will be represented. Three bowls will be used for the pairs games. Invitation To Havelock. The Kia Toa Club has invited the Havelock North Club members to play on their green on Saturday, March 3, as the Havelock green will be occupied with the champion pairs games on that day.
