NELSON AND THE MAU
Budget Exhibited in Court ADMISSION BY THE DEFENCE By Telegraph—Press Assn —Copyright. APIA, December 20. The hearing was resumed to-day of the charge against Mr 0. F. Nelson of identifying himself with seditious activities in connection with the Mau and with being in possession of documents in relation to Mau organisations. Inspector Braisby continued his evidence And was still in the box when the Court adjourned at 3.30 p.m. Among exhibits seized at Nelson’s residence was the Mau budget, prepared and written by Nelson—a fact admitted by the defence, —which contained the following items:— Receipts.—Tax paid by natives, £2400; fines collected, £100; total £2500, less amount retained for village committees £5OO, leaving a total of £2000; contributions received for the Women’s Mau, £100; “Samoa Guardian,” £lOO ;total receipts, £2200. Expenditure.—“ Samoa Guardian,” £500; chief secretary, £6O; assistantsecretary, £45; office stationery, £55 ; transport, £4O; president, £100; eleven Ministers, £200; retainers, Tuimalealiifano £lOO, Faipules £484; village secretaries. £132; maintenance of capital, Vaimoso, £344; total expenditure £2OOO. The balance remaining is £2OO. There is an error of £6O in the total expenditure. These figures are as shown cn the exhibits.
