SHERENDEN FUNCTION SPECIAL PRIZES PRESENTED A pleasing function took place at the Sherenden School on Wednesday afternoon on the occasion of the annual break-up and prize-giving. Sir Andre - Russell, who presided, made some very kindly and encouraging remarks before presenting the class prizes, and also very generously gave a first and a second prize for the best boys’ gardens, which were won by Robert Epplett and George Matthews respectively. In the primers section Ernest Epplett received a prize for his garden. Lady Russell kindly donated a prize, which was won by Grace Epplett for her flower garden. The thanks of the committee are due to Mr Marchant, the previous teacher, for his gift of two splendid prizes for “best trier’’ boy and girl. These were won by Grace and Robert Epplett.
After the prize-giving the visitors, having examined with considerable interest the grounds and the pleasing wall decorations executed by the children, adjourned for afternoon tea, this closing a very happy afternoon. TAKAPAU SCHOOL ADDRESS BY MR MADDISON The breaking-up ceremony at the Takapau School took place on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of parents. Mr N. M. Paulsen, chairman fo the committee! who presided, referred to the good work that had been done on the Hawke’s Bay Education Board by Mr W. Cuthbertson, member for the Southern Ward and by Mr G. A. Maddison. chairman of the Education Board, who were both present. Mr Paulsen particularly stressed the fair representation that was accorded to the country schools. A short programme by the pupils was given as follows: —Dance and action play, infants; Easter balance display, Standard IV girls; playette, Std. II boys; debate, “Hottie Lessons,” Std. V.; folk dances, senior pupils,_ Mr Maddison gave an interesting address to the parents and to the children, whom he referred to as the junior partners who would soon be asked to carry on. Mr Maddison presented the dux medal (donated by Mr N. M. Paulsen) to ths winner, Daphne Olsen, and also presented the proficiency certificates and attendance certicates. In doing so he 'congratulated the liearmaster (Mr Caughley). on the 100 per cent pass in Standard VI, 21 out of 22 gaining proficiency certificates and one a competency. After the National Anthem was sung afternoon tea was dispensed and concluded a very enjoyable function.
