SOUTHERN SUGGESTIONS

REGARDING RICCARTON. A field without a favourite seems to be the present position in connection with the New Zealand Cup, says “Sentinel” in the Dunedin “Times.” • e e On Tuesday at Riccarton. Don Jo-. (G. Barr) gave a faultless display oier five hurdles, maintaining a fast pave throughout. • • • Lordly Knight pleased by leaving five furlongs behind in Jinin 2 l-ssec, the last half mile in 49 J-sscc. A rider had not then been obtained for him in the Stewards’ Handicap. Pin Money, brother to Gold Tinge and also trained by Davis, reeled off half a mile home in 48 l-see, tim< that was not equalled during the morn ing. He will be an interesting oppon ent for Coronilla in the Welcono Stakes. • • • Thus ‘' Rangatira, ” after running through the poor lot engaged in th<New Zealand Cup:—So this prelimii. ary review covers the full field el thirteen—a rather premonitory number, be it noted—and tho reduction for th. present may thin the 4 HSU ® down to Epigram, Southdown, I’ulantua, and Rocket. The Auckland “Star’s” msu thinks Rocket, Inflation, I’ulantua, Kamo, and Brambleton likely tu take tho public fancy. Minerva! was restricted to easy work only. He galloped a mile the previous day on the No. 1 grass in J. 42, carry ing a lightweight. In the face of tb. quality of the Cup field, there is a tea deucy to conider seriously the prospects of Minerval, who ran second in last year’s race, ami is the only candidate in this year’s field that has mastered a two mile journey. •* • • Great Star and Double Shot were given a useful working gallop over seven furlongs, taking 1.34. The lor mer was idle for a week following bis first day’s race at Trentham, and re surned work only on Saturday. He is booked to contest the Stewards’ Handicap, but will hardly be at his best. • • • Southdown, joined by Water Polo al six furlongs, ran a mile in Imin 45 2-5 see, the last half in 54sec. A rider has not yet been secured for Southdown in the Cup, but an effort is being made to get a North Island lightweight. He requires a strong horseman, and his chance in the Cup will largely depend on the selection. • • • Variant, who had her initial race in the novice event at Motukarara last Saturday and is due to make her next appearance in the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes on Saturday, is the well-bred bay filly by Limond from the Absurd mare Motley, for whom Mr A. Louisson, of Nightmarch fume, paid 275 guineas at the last January stiles. She is a full-sister to Al Jonson and Midinette, and on breeding she should not be long in coming into useful form. • • • Rocket, by Day Comet from a fullsister to Winning Hit, should stay if be does anything, and it is probable that he will be the Cup favourite now on the day. His second to Silver Scorn in the Derby displayed his staying promise, and he recently produced winning form at Trentham, so that he looks to have had his preparation quite well timed. He comes from the same stable as last year's winner (Fast Passage), and he will have the advantage of one of the strongest lightweight riders in the race, A. IL Lastwood, which may count a lot o'er the final part of the two miles. • • • Horn Reefs, who will be making his first ajqiearauce in the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes on Saturday, is a two-year-old bay colt by Day Comet from the Antagonist mare Brave Deed, so that ho is n half btother to Zeebrugge, Doirnn, and Falkland, all winners. Like b s relatives be lias been appropriately named, for Horn Reefs are the line of rucks off the coast of Jutland where Beatty attempted to cut off Vi* retreat (Continue! ou page 3)
