NOTES FROM THE NORTH

CANDIDATES AND CHANCES. The following excerpts from northern exchanges bearing on prospects at the A.R.C. Spring Meeting may be of interest. Additional riding engagements:— P. Atkins, Carfex; A. G. Murray, Hushing; D. Craddock, Mahkill; H. Goldfinch, Mazurka bolt; and E. Manson, Baroscope (Mikhelon Cup). Despite the fact that he ran second ou the first day at Avondale, Tatyoou's efforts were disappointing, and he has yet to fulfil the early promise lie showed. He will have to improve tu have a chance in the Gordon Handicap. • « t» Holly Lu has been making good progress in his work of late and has fully recovered from the leg injury ho received some weeks ago. He is engaged in the Gordon Handicap, but will probably require a race or two before being seen at his best. « • • Jumping with confidence throughout Valpeen on Saturday at Paeroa gave a much improved showing to that of opening day. Ho went to the trout early and was never afterwards headed. Vulpeen’s Ellerslie prospects will be enhanced by his Saturday display.

Guy Blonde is causing her trainer anxiety, owing to the fact that since racing at Avondale she has not been feeding well. Consequently she will not take her place in the Welcome Stakes Held, and it may not be until tho Takapuna meeting arrives that she will again be asked to sport silk.

It was a pity that Tavern Knight failed to take any part in the Avondale Guineas race, as in the Champion Plate on the first day he was running on well in fourth position and gave the impression ho might have run out a good mile. Should he take his place in the Great Northern Guineas ho may be in the light at the finish.

Alignment has been working well since the Avondale meeting and may bo given a run in the Hu was unlucky on the second day at Avondale, as he did not get away well and was finishing fast in third place. This colt looks in excellent fettle and should not disgrace himself, although the Guineas field will provide him with solid opposition.

Tradesman, who has been off the scene snee the Pakuranga meeting, is engaged in the open sprint. Reilly’s pupil has been handling his tasks in good style at To Rapa, and should strip in excellent condition for his Saturday outing. The local horseman J. Duly, has been engaged to ride him.

Gay Marigold is due to salute the judge at auy time now, as her two Avondale efforts show. This filly, though small, is houest, and, having benefited by racing at Avondale, should be in excellent trim for immediate engagements. Gay Marigold, like King March, is now being trained by A. Rhodes, who took them over after the Avondale meeting.

Greek Gold is again likely to run his usual honest race in the Flying Handicap. In all his recent efforts he has been carrying solid imposts, and will appreciate the drop in poundage, while the extra furlong should not bother him as he has previously succeeded over seven furlongs. Greek Gold will not be without friends on Saturday.

Since coming to Takanini King March has created a good impression in his track essays, and is due to make his next appearance in the Mitchelson Cup. King March’s efforts at Avondale were not up to that expected of him and there is a doubt as to his generosity. His next effort will bo watched with interest, as the distance of 12 furlongs may find him in the limelight.

The Te Rapa trained Sirona will bo having her next outing in the Welcome Stakes and on her promising showings at Paeroa on opening day, when she did not have the best of the running, will not be without liberal support in her engagement.

Exaggeration reads well at 7.2 in the Shorts Handicap, and her win nt Avondale will ensure her many followers in her next engagement, as she has shown an early return to form. There is a bettor field engaged than that in which sho was successful recently, but she is likely weighted and she should mnke her presence felt on Saturday. She certainly appears to have very rosy prospects.

Nothing at Takanini is galloping better than the three-year-old filly Gay Sheila. On Tuesday she was responsible for tho best gallop of the morning when she beat Gay Marigold over five furlongs tn Im. 2s. So far this season Gay Sheila has an unbeaten record, having won the three races she has contested. She is likely to be a decided first choice with backers in tho Great Northern Guineas. She is developing into a great filly and there is no doubt that New Zealand bloodstock suffered a severe loss when her sire, Gay Shield, died during the winter.

On Tuesday morning Kairuri was given a further trial over the steeplechase fences at Ellerslie and acquitted himself in an encouraging manner, though he appeared a bit careful when taking off at several of tho fences. However, ho is likely to jump with more confidence in a race and can he depended on to give a good account of himself in tho Onehunga Steeplechase • • • Kiltowyn is to have his first serious try-out in good company in the Flying Handicap. At his last appearance he narrowly won at Avondale m much weaker class, but he did the iob well, going ahead in the last couple of strides, his rider displaying exceptional confidence. This promoted hack is a good sort, but ho w ill need to be up to highest expectations if ho h to win Saturday's Flying Handicap against horses like Qreek Gold and All Humbug. Speedmint will now take her place ru the Mitchelson Cup field. This mare is working very well at present, and there is no doubt that she is ns well now ns ever before. She ran a creditable race in the. Avondale Cup and will strip one of the fittest of the Cup candidates

on Saturday. She is one of the few of Saturday’s field who have been succetsful at twelve furlongs, and sho should uuiuiuamj respect • • • Zane Grey, who is engaged in the Hunter*' Steeplechase, was schooled over a round of the big fences on Tuesday morning and gave a first-class jumping display. Thia horse know* every inch of the steeplechase course at headquarters, and thia, together with the fact that he is a very sate jumper, will wan ant him getting solid support. Zane Grey baa never been in better racing condition than at present and is sure to put up a creditable showing. The three-year-old My Money is displaying abundance of s peed in his truck work and gives eiery indication that he will develop improved form befuiu tho present season is much further advanced. He is a solid type of hack with a smooth style ol galloping, and when properly seasoned should be cap able of holding liu own with the best of his class racifig around these pails My Money is due to make bi* next uj>pcarance in the Hobson Handicap next •Monday and will lune more than an outside chance. « • • As the result of their impressive woik-out out a round on the course proper at Ellerslie on Tuesday the Mitchelson Cuj> candidates Red bun and Carfex have gamed additional friends Both horses did their work in attractive style, and the time registered compared favourably with that of other good handicap bois.-s in previous year, at this period of the season. The fact that Red Sun has previously won over a mile and a half is a bit in his favour and he is likely to be in better demand than Carfex, who has yet to prove his ability to run out that distance. However. the latter has several wins to his credit over a mile and a quarter, ami as ho is a very game finisher there is no reason why the extra couple of furlongs should seriously trouble him. Au regards condition, both horses arc quite ready for the task ahead of them. • * • Summing up after reviewing tinfields, the Auckland "Star’s"’ turf writer predicts that for the Mitchelson Cup king's Knave, Red Sun, View Halloo, Prindb Vai and Royal Artist may excite most interest among machine patrons on Saturday next Some he exjieets to be fancied in the Shorts Handicap are Pus* Moth, Exaggeration and Porotiti.
