NAPIER RELIEF PAY
MAYOR MAKES STATEMENT. WORK OF SOCIAL SERVICE COMMITTEE. When discussing the matter of cut* in relief workers’ pay with a newspaper representative yesterday afternoon, the Mayor of Napier (Mr C. O. Morse) expressed the opinion that th* representations made by the deputation regarding the social service committe* were a little misleading. “1 doubt w.iether it is the general opinion of t lint workers that the unemployed allocation has been entailed on account of the activities of the Social Service Committee,” he said. “I put forward the suggestion to the delegation that a trial of one month of ’.ll* relaxation of the Social Service Committee might prove or disprove the representations made by the deputation. ‘‘For the time being, however, it is impossible for me to say whether a meeting will be held next Sunday or not. Before finally deciding 1 shall wait for a reply to tlie telegram 1 sent to Mr Barnard this afternoon Th« Mayor said further that on account of the public response to appeals, the Napier Social Service Commies-*-, through the Mayor's Fund, wouln be able to distribute a gml deal :nor* this week end than was anticipated Although the volume distributed would not, lie said, be anything like ’.he requirements, the latest appeal had been fully justified. To supplement the funds, a copper trail would begin tomorrow morning, from Daitou street up to Messrs Blythe’s premises, ami continue daily for about a fortnight “Every foot in that trail will represent tenpence,’’ he said, “or every yard two-iind-sixpence. The result of this trail will be banked each day, and a certificate as to progres* issued to the daily press.”
