HOUNSLOW’S TREBLE
EQU ALLED THIRTY YEARS AGO. “Kowhcke,'' Hastings, writes as follows:—Hounslow's feat in winning a hurdle race on each day of a three-days’ meeting is probably a “record” for Riccarton, but it is not for New Zealand. Memory carries me back to the Ellerslie course just thirty years ago, where, at the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting, the Ute Mr G. P. 'Donnelly’s Kuuraka
gelding Awahuri went through the same performance. Starting on the first day under lOst 71b, he won over a two-mile journey by four lengths from “Dick” Hannon’s Bellman, also lOst 71b, that great hurdler Cavaliero, 12st 61b, finishing a long way back in third place. For the second day, with the distance reduced by a quarter-mile, lie was lifted to list 71b, and again beat Bellman, list 31b, and just as easily. On the third day, although set to carry 12st 31b over two miles, he frightened all but Bellman, list 101 b, and another out of the race and had six lengths to spare from the latter when he reached the winning post. Awahuri then went on to win the Wanganui Steeplechase under list 41b from a fine eross-eountry horse in Scallywag, list 81b, winding up the winter’s programme with a three lengths’ victory in the Grand National Steeplechase carrying list 31b. On all these occasions the scarlet and white stripes were worn by J. Cameron, not “our Jack,’' of Histings, who is still happily with us, but a namesake, who is now, I fancy, careering over the green fields of Elysium. Perhaps some of your other middle-aged readers—l'm only 75 myself—can give other instances of a like treble exploit. I can recall none.
