The Minister of Lands (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) visited Oamaru yesterday and met a deputation of Crown tenants, who asked for remission of half their arrears of rent, and that the balance owing be spread over a period. The Minister replied that the policy of the department was to treat each individual case on its merits and that no general remission was possible. Asked by tho Returned Soldiers’ Association for an assurance that no repossessed property under the Disabled Soldiers Settlement Act would bo offered a civilian at a lower value than the amount owing without giving the mortgagor a chance of taking the property at that value, the Minister replied that whore the mortgagor was a trier he would eertainlv rot be passed over for a civilian.— Frees Association.
