VALUE OF EXPORTS SLOW BUT STEADY EXPANSION. DISTRIBUTION OVERSEAS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 17, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 16. The Board of Trade journal states: “In the current year there has been a slow but steady expansion in the value of United Kingdom exports and in view of the decline in the average value of exported goods it is probable that for May and June as well as for July the volume of shipments exceeded those of the corresponding months of last year. Though the volume of retained imports is normally much smaller in summer than in the early months of the year there has been a tendency this year for retained imports also to increase in volume, this being mainly due to raw materials.’’ Regarding the distribution of overseas trade, it is stated that imports into the United Kingdom from British countries in the first six months of 1933 were valued at 38.78 per cent, of the total imports from all sources, compared with 36.23 per cent, and 31.36 per cent, in the corresponding periods of 1932 and 1924 respectively. The exports of the United Kingdom to British countries accounted for 44.12 per cent, of the total value of shipments to all destinations as against 44.82 per cent and 40.71 per cent, respectively for the corresponding periods of 1932 and 1924. It is added that the slight decline compared with 1932 was much more than accounted for by the smaller purchases this year by the Irish Free State. GOLD RISES. 'British Official Wireless.)
