A definite promise that there would be a reduction in the unemployment relief tax at an early date was made by the Premier of New South Wales, the Hon. B. S. Stevens, at the Loan Council meeting. He would not, however, indicate the probable extent of the reduction or the probable date of its commencement. GENERAL RELIEF MEASURES. (Received 9, 10.40 a.m.) CANBERRA, June 9. A definite promise of taxation relief in this year’s budget was given by Sir George Pearce in the Senate. He said that the whole field of taxation would be reviewed in the forthcoming Budget to see in what manner the greatest relief can be given. THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION. (Received 9, 10.50 a.m.) MELBOURNE, June 9. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. A. Lyons, explained to the Premiers’ Conference the Federal Government’s scheme for the proposed constitutional convention, which, would consist of 18 State representatives, the convention to make recommendations to the Commonwealth Government. Marked hostility to the plan was displayed by several Premiers. The proposal for the suspension of sinking fund payments for one year was rejected.
