NOTORIOUS BANDIT SENTENCED

HEAVY FINE AND IMPRISON’ MENT.

(Received 9, 10.40 a.in.) AJACCIO, June 8.

The bandit Spada was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fined 1000 francs for illegal possession of firearms. He will be tried in November for alleged murders.

Spada, the notorious bandit king, was arrested on May 29 when hiding near a village. His mother, father and two brothers were also arrested. The brigand had recently been seized with religious mania; he left his mountain fastnesses and came to the village of Coggia with a crucifix at his breast and a crown on his head and knelt in prayer before the church. The authorities thus learned of his presence and arrested him.
