THE UNEMPLOYED

HOUSING ANO RATES. IMPRACTICABLE PROPOSAL. Regarding the proposal that the Borough Council should take over the housing and rates responsibilities of unemployed workers, the Mayor (Mr G. A. Maddison) reported to the Hastings Borough Council last evening that he had met a deputation from the executive of the H.R.U.W.A. and explained the legal position to them, and pointed out that owing to the financial difficultiea it would be quite impossible for the council to give effect to the suggestions contained in the resolution, apart altogether from the legal aspect of the matter. The action of the Mayor was approved. “To accede to their request would have meant an expenditure of £223,000,” said the Mayor, “so that it was quite impracticable, apart from tho legal aspect.” ,
