HAWKE’S BAY TOURNEY SETS STRENUOUSLY FOUCHT. SINGLES TO MISS N. HOWELL. The closing stages of the annual tournament of the Hawke’s Bay Lawn Teniiis Association were reached at the courts of the Hawke’s Bay Tennis Club yesterday afternoon. All the finals, except the men’s championship singles, the combined championship doubles, the men’s handicap singles and the combined handicap doubles, were played, the matches producing some strenuously fought sets. The ladies’ championship singles was won by Miss Nancy Howell, who showed a return to form after about three weeks of mediocre tennis. She defeated Mrs Hassall in two sets by 6—3, 6—4. The ladies’ doubles was won by Misses Glenny and Howell, who defeated Mesdames Cotterill and Hassall, 6—5, 6—5. IVard and Robinson beat Aldred and Forbes in the men’s championship doubles, the match going to three sets. The completed series will be played this week, probably next Saturday afternoon. Tho following were the results of yesterday afternoon's play:— CHAMPIONSHIPS MEN’S SINGLES. Semi-Finals.—Forbes beat Elliott, I—6, 6—5, 6—4; Aldred beat Ward, 6—l, 6—o. LADIES’ DOUBLE'S. Final — Misses Glenny and Howell beat Mesdames Cotterill and Hassall 6—5, 6—5. MEN’S DOUBLES. Final.— Ward and Robinson beat Aldred and Forbes, 4—6, 6—5, 6—4. COMBINED DOUBLES. Semi-finals.— Lowry and Mrs Hassall beat Wheeler and Miss J. Ormond, 6 —2, 6—2; Forbes and Miss A. Ormond beat Ward and Mrs Maw-son, 6—4, 6—l. HANDICAPS, LADIES’ SINGLES. Tho Wellington lawn tennis tournament was completed at Miramar. R. McL. Ferkins won the men’s singles, beating R. Howe, 6—3, 6—4, in the final. The mixed doubles was won by R. Howe and Miss D. Howe, beating in the final E. A. Roussell and Miss F. Fernie, 9—7, 7— 5.
