HAVELOCK N. GATHERING VERY SUCCESSFUL GATHERING LARGE ATTENDANCE OF SPECTATORS. In common with many other .sporting bodies throughout Hawke’s Bay the Havelock North Amateur Athletic Club enjoyed wonderful weather for its annual Easter meeting held yesterday, aud this fact alone must have accounted for the very large increase in the i-t--lendance in comparison with la.t year ihe weather is always the m factor that can make or mar such an event, aud this year’s feature was a striking contrast to some previous years wntn rain has set in before the sports have actually started. The crowd began to gather quite early in the morning, and it was apparent that many people flora outside the immediate precincts of the township had taken the opportunity to ma ;e a picnic of the outing. ±he meeting was highly suco-ssiui u every conceivable way. the attendance was far bigger than that of previous years, the entries in most events were very large and there were no accidents to mar the pleasantness of the sports. Considering the limited extent of the grounds, tho committee had catered exceptionally well for each branch of sport that was being featured, and the programme was so arranged as to enable several events to be run oil' at the same time. There was never a dull moment during the whole day and the proceedings were made brighter by the presence of the Hastings Citizens’ Band, which played selections throughout the afternoon. The dog trials and the horse events were watched with the keenest interest and were big features of the day’s sport. In presenting the cups and prizes at the close of the sports, Mr J. H. McNiven congratulated the committee on its splendid meeting and said that no one knew the great amount of work that was entailed in organising such a meeting, especially in these hard times when people were short of money, and the committee deserved praise for the very fine afternoon’s sport. He was pleased to see the way the younger people had been catered for, as it was to them one had to look for the future competitors in the big events. 'I here was one drawback, he said, and that was that the grounds were on the small side, and he urged the club to get bigger grounds so that they would draw bigger entries still and have a meeting equal to some of the best at present being held. He hoped they would endeavour to do this for next year’s event. Mr McNiven congratulated the horse judges, Messrs. J. D. Ormond, junr., and Snerratt oh the very capable way in which they had judged the numerous events and stated that he was pleased the younger men were coming forward to take the place of the older hands. Last evening a dance was held in the Village Hall which was largely attended, and this brought to a very successful conclusion one of the best sports meetings the club has held.
