WAIPUKURAU MEETING

SERIES OF CLOSE FINISHES VALSIER WINS THE CUP KAIHORO THE FLYING The Waipukurau Jockey Club’; autumn meeting was held at Waipukurau yesterday in beautiful weather anti before a good attendance of the publie The grounds were in splendid order ant the track very fast. The many close finishes reflected Credit upon the judgment of the handicapper (Mr H. Coyle) while the judge (Mr W. P. Russell) gave every satisfaction in his decisions which in several instances had to bt made upon the barest of margins. In the first four events heads only separated tho winning horses, which it almost a record for any course. In the Maiden, Bradman, who wat fancied by the public, appeared when 100 yards away from the post to bo safe, when Tareha camo up from the field to snatch victory by a head. The Hatuma Hack, after an exciting race was won by the outsider Master Frank, who prevailed by a short head over the Greenmeadows champion Grumpy, who load almost from the jump-out. Chock Say, by getting up almost at tho last moment, beat Sylvan Dell by a short head. In this race Sylvan Dell led practically all the way to fade’ over the last few yards. With his excellent run r t Hastings on Saturday, White Fang, who was made a strong favourite, was expected to give a good account in the Cup event but had to take third by a small margin from both Valsier and Princess 8011, who ran consistently throughout the race. Only a small field started in the Oringi Handicap, which was a walk-over for Cullus, who repeated his form of Saturday. Gold Ruler secured an easy win in the Ladies’ Handicap. Mr G. G. Beatson, with good horsemanship, outrode the favourite, who no doubt was handicapped through delay on the road, having arrived only in time to take part in the event. Princess Bell in her second start for tho day secured a good win in the Purimu Hack by making a great run and heading off both Master Frank and Tiger Gain, who were stoutly contesting the honours. Being over three-quarters of an hour late in starting, it was practically dark when tho field in the final event was seat away. The colours were distinguishable only when the field was a few chains away. The fovaurite Kaihoro won easily, although Paleta finished full of running. The arrangements for tho meeting were ably carried out by the secretary (Mr W. G. Nightingale) and his officials, and tho public had every reason to be satisfied with the day’s soprt. A programme of popular selections by tho Waipukurau Town Band was appreciated by the public. The totalisator handled £6296 10/- for tho day, as compared with £6390 for the same day last year, a decrease of £93 10/-. Had it not been for two very small fields the total investments would have shown a good increase for the day. MAIDEN RACE Of 50 sovs; 7 furlongs. 2- Mr C. Bell’s b.g.
