EASTER RACING

HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB SUCCESSFUL MEETINC. EXCITING FINISHES. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was opened at Hastings on Saturday in beautiful weather, there being a good attendance of the public. The course was on the hard side, while the going was very fast. In most of the events good fields faced the starter, and the public was treated to some excellent racing. The manner in which the fields were brought together reflected credit upon the judgment of the handicapper (Mr H. Coyle). The finish in the second event was the finest seen in any maiden event for a long time. In the hurdle event Kinsel, after going to the front five furlongs from home, won comfortably, although he jumped rather badly in the early stages. The Maiden drew a big field and was won by Royal Shift, who did not get a good start. Ho rapidly turned the scales on the disadvantage to win from the favourite by a small margin. In the Nursery Mr C. Twist received a popular win when Cullus gathered in the field in the straight to win decisively. The public’s judgment was well placed in the Cup, which was won by Speed just as White Fang, making a run on the outer, looked a winner. High Grader in the Hcrctaunga Handicap looked the winner as the field entered the straight and he did not disappoint, after taking charge from Sabatini, to hold off qll challengers. The way Grumpy led over the greater part of the Autumn Handicap looked as if Mr Twist was to have a brace of wins, but Stitch, in a great gallop, led the way past the judge’s box. Although the smallest field of the day started in the last event, the finish proved to be most exciting. Kaihoro, after regaining the lead, looked the winner when Tahoma got up almost in the last stride for the pair to bo level as they raced past the post. All eyes of the public turned to the judge’s box, there being much cheering as the numbers were raised. The arrangements for the day were ably carried out by tho secretary, Mr H. S. Moss, and his officials. A musical programme by tho Hastings Citizens’ Band was thoroughly enjoyed by the public. The totalisator handled £7Oll, as compared with £7917 for the corresponding day last year, when eight events were run. Concluding results:— HAWKE’S BAY CUP HANDICAP Of 150 sovs.; 1J mile. 1/1 Mr C.
