ORDINARY GAMES

THE BLUFF HILL CLUB SMALL ATTENDANCE Owing to the holidays and teams away at the tournament, there was only a small muster at the Bluff Hili green on Saturday afternoon. The green was playing very fast and the wind was gusty and consequently accurate driving was difficult. Games played resulted as follow: — Triggs, Quinn, Bestall, Douglas (s) 25: Dean, South Harvey, McLennan (s) 13. Christie, Bedford, Somerset Smith (s) 27; J. W. H. Wood, J. A. Smith, Steele (s) 14. SPACEMAN SHIELD. McClurg and Newton (s) lost the Spackmau Shield during the week to McGregor and Engiebretseu (s) (Napier) after a very exciting game. Bluff Hill took the lead early and including a comfortable five were nine up on the tenth head, the score being 13 —4. This thirteen proved unlucky as Newton remained there until Englebretsen caught up. The fifteenth head provided a good haul for Napier. McGregor was lying with all four bowls, the shot bowl being about 18 inqjies in front and a trifle on the wing. With his third bowl Newton drew second shot lying alongside the shot bowl. Englebretsen came down with a beautiful yard-on shot which shifted Newton’s ball and took its place Napier now lying seven Newton drew with his last, but unfortunately it struck a short Napier bowl and was deflected away from the head, Napier thus securing seven and losing the full eight on the measure. Napier was now five up. From then on McClurg and Newton played superb bowls and overhauled their opponents, until on the twentyfirst head they were only one down. The last head was played under difficult conditions, as the light was failing badly. McClurg drew two good bowls right in front of kitty and Newton put a third in, the remaining bowls being on the wings and blocking the draw. Lying three up, it looked a sure win for Newton, but fortune favoured Englebretsen, who with his last bowl, knocked up one of McGregor’s short bowls into shot, thereby winning by a margin of two. “AT HOME” DAY TO-MORROW. Mr H. Mayo, president of the Port Ahuriri Bowling Club, extends an invitation to all bowlers to be present at the Port club’s greens to-morrow (Wednesday) afternoon, when members will be “at homo” on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the veteran bowler Mr J. P. Smith.
