CANDIDATES FOR COUNCIL BUSINESS MEN’S NOMINEES. SELECTION BY BALLOT. A meeting of Hastings citizens was held in the Chamber of Commerce rooms yesterday to consider the approaching local body elections. Mr H. H. French was appointed chairman. There was a large and representative attendance. The chairman said the meeting was primarily concerned with the nominations for the Borough Council. A charge had been made that members of the business community had not shown sufficient readiness to make their contribution in service in the management of the largest business in the town, that of the Borough Council. They were present to answer that charge. It was not enough to point out the extent of their contributions in rates and tuxes, though they amounted to many thousands of pounds. The difficulty experienced in the past, and which would be realised afresh, was that some men who were prepared to serve were not eligible unless they sacrificed the business their particular firm or company was doing with the Borough Council, or resigned from such firm or company. In a number of cases such action was impossible. The chairman then moved: “It is the desire of this meeting to support candidates for the Borough Council who will ask for a review of borough expenditure to ascertain if efficiency cannot be maintained with a reduction in taxation.'*—Seconded by Mr Redgrave and carried. BALLOT FOR CANDIDATES. It was then resolved that all present agree to the submission of their names to a ballot, and that the leading ffle names who are eligible for service should be asked to accept nomination Ln tho ensuing discussion it was pointed out that the limitation of names to five was to enable each member to support such other candidate as each may desire.
