The “Hawke’s Bay Tribune” will NOT be published on Good Friday or Easter Monday. The Celtic Rugby Football Club will hold practice matches at Nelson Park on Easter Saturday at 2. p.m., and all players are asked to attend. In the New Zealand Railways advertisement of fares for the Easter holidays which appeared in our issue last Saturday, the first-class single fare from Hastings to Hawera road as 37/9. This should have appeared as 27/9. The Greenmeadows Hall has again been chosen by the Napier H. 5.0.8. Association in which to hold their annual ball. The dance, which is held on Easter Monday night of each year, has always been an exceedingly popular event, and this year promises to be no exception. The grand Easter ball to be held in the Hastings Assembly Hall on. Easter Monday night promises to be a great success. The committee have been working hard and have done everything possible to assure patrons of an excellent night’s pleasure. Los Henry’s band of seven instruments have had several rehearsals for the ball. The supper promises to be something special. There will be free buses from Port Ahuriri and Napier. The N.Z.R. road motor services advertise in this issue particulars of alterations to the usual Napier-Hastings time-table over the Easter period. Attention is drawn to services eliminated and to substitute runs provided. On Monday evening an 11.36 p.m. bus will run from both Napier and Hastings. On Good Friday evening a 10.30 p.m. service is provided from either end for the convenience of theatre patrons. On Saturday, April 15 and 22, buses leav ing Napier from 10.30 a.m. up to 1.30 p.m. will run to Hastings Racecourse for Tijce patrons returning from the course nn and after the second last race. Fares, Napier to racecourse 2/- ' single, 3/6 return.

Complaints of the activities of a bogus traffic inspector were received by the Christchurch City Council. A woman writer says she was walking near the Bowker Fountain when an elderly man officiously ordered her to walk in another direction. Several older women likewise were accosted. The letter was referred to the chief traffic inspector, who reported that twice during the past month he had shifted a man acting as an inspector in the centre of a street. The department did not know the man's name. —Press Assn. The Dunedin City Council approved of a scheme to bring in an extra supply of water from Deep Creek to avoid shortage. It is estimated that 2,500,0(10 gallons can bo obtained at a cost of £lBl,OOO. The council’s trading de partment for the year ended March 81 showed a net profit of £52,014 against £43,048 the previous year; £26,300 ol the profits for the year have been trans, lerred to the municipal department in relief of rates, leaving a balance of £25,654 available for extension, which was expended during the year.—Press Assn. The scholarship which has been endowed by Mr Hiatt Baker in memory of his sou, who was killed at Napier in the earthquake, is of the value of £2OO a year, tenable for two years and may be extended for a third year. Election to the scholarship will be made by the Vice-Chancellor of Bristol University, England, where the scholars are expected to continue their studies in one of the subjects for which degrees are awarded.—Press Assn, The programme for the Ashburton Band for Easter Sunday will be of special interest to all lovers of good music. At 11 a.m. a service will be held in the Warren Street Citadel. The service will be conducted by Brigadier Cottrell (divisional commander), assisted by the visitors. At 3 p.m. a very interesting programme will be given in Nelson Park, when Ashburton, Christchurch City, Hastings Citizens’, and the Hastings S.A. Bands will participate. With fine weather the citizens are promised one of the finest programmes of music yet heard and a large attendance is expected from all parts of the district. Residents of Hastings and Napier and visitors to Hawke’s Bay have their attention called to a special advertisement appearing in our columns relative to the “Joyland” Tea Kiosk, ideally situated on the Westshore beach, Napier, just off the embankment. The kiosk will be open every day, including Good Friday and Easter Bunday, from 10 a.m., with a cabaret dance on Easter Saturday evening. For those who have not their own cars, the Westshore ’bus will be running on each day from Clive Square, and the ferry from the Port on Saturday-, Sunday-, and Monday. The kiosk is equipped with a radio gramophone, and patrons of “Joyland” can dance to their heart’s content during the daytime. The Napier Competition Society’s Easter Festival commences to-night in the Foresters’ Hall at 7.30 sharp, when a splendid programme will be presented. The competitions continue all day to-morrow, the sessions commencing at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7.30 p.m The sessions w-ill be further advanced on Saturday, when the Highland and national dancing will be held in the Trinity Hall, the elocution in the Foresters’ Hall, and the instrumental music, and singing downstairs for the morning only. Varied programmes will be presented on Saturday afternoon and night, and also on Easter Monday afternoon and evening. The day admissions are 1/- for adults; evening prices 2/- for front seats and 1/- for back. Children half-price. Session tickets 10/6 admit to all sessions except the demonstration. A new series of weekly old-time dances was commenced in the Trades Hall last evening, there being a good attendance. The main feature of the evening was a waltzing competition, for which 12 couples entered. Excellent dancing was witnessed, and the judges, Messre Pearce and H. Hearn, had no easy task, but their choice of Miss Ivy Burchard and Mr Smith seemed to meet with universal approval. Excellent music was supplied for the dancing by Mrs Hearn’s Premier Orchestra, and the winners were presented with a trophy. The rest of the evening was taken up with old-time dancing. A dainty supper was provided during an interval. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs Garvey and Mr Leithley, with Nurse John,son and Mr Spier second. Four prizes were also given for a consolation Monte Carlo. Next week, in addition to the usual two Monte Carlos, a special one will also be held for a trophy. The card results last evening were: Ladies, M rs Symonds and Mr Laurent (playing as lady) tied for first; Mr Legge 1, Mr Guy * Is.

A jazz dance will be held in the Favourite Hall, Hastings, on Easteri Saturday. Many prominent riflemen from various parts of the Dominion will be taking part in the twenty-fifth annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Rifle Association to be held at Roy’s Hill, Hastings, on Saturday. Excellent entries have come to hand, and there will be six matches in addition to the championship teams’ match. The report of the special committee appointed by the Wellington Hospital Board “to consider the position in regard to the melical and general administration of the hospital” was brought down at a meeting of the Board yesterday. The Board agreed unanimously to a clause stipulating that “the medical superintendent shall be a medical practitioner duly registered in New Zealand, and possessing approved senior degree in medicine or surgery.” Wider administrative powers were assigned to the secretary, and a proposal to reduce the salary of the medical superintendent from £1023 to £5OO a year was deferred, after consideration, until April 27,
