NEWS ITEMS. From Our Own Correspondent. Messrs Yates (chairman), Strang, Hutchings and Verran and Mesdames Adeane and Mason attended the monthly meeting of the Waipawa District High School Committee, apologies for absence being received from Mr Gallagher and the Rev. H. Dyson. The headmaster (Mr J. H. Hill) was in attendance. The report of the headmaster showed the average attendance for the month as follows:—Primary 174, roll 185; secondary 67, roll 70. It was decided to purchase three typewriters from Miss Staffan for £B. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr G. Cooper for the gift of a sectional picture of the liner Aquitania. At the close of the meeting the chairman thanked members for their support during the year, and expressed the hope that they would all consent to accept nomination for the ensuing year. Prior to his departure for Hastings to take up the position of goods manager in that branch for Williams and Kettle, Ltd., Mr G. Cooper was entertained by the staff of the Waipawa branch, and presented with a solid leather suit case. In making the presentation the manager, Mr F. M. Tickner, referred to the harmonious relations which had existed over a period of 13 years, and wished Mr Cooper a full measure of success in his new sphere. There was an attendance of well on to 200 persons at the first “ladies’ night’’ of the Central Lodge, R.A.0.8., held in the Concert Hall. The first part of the programme consisted of concert items, songs being contributed by Mrs Jrujean, Miss Rust, and Messrs Barker, Patterson and L. Wood, recitations by Miss M. Wills, and instrumental and orchestral selections by Miss Hodge and party and Miss Betty Cooper’s orchestra. During an interval in the proceedings Bro. A. K. Johnston, K.0.M., G.P.N.Z., addressed the gathering on the history, aims and objects of the R.A.0.8. After supper dancing was indulged in to music provided by Miss Cooper’s orchestra. The team to represent the Waipawa Fire Brigade at the demonstration to be held at Carterton during Easter will comprise Sub-Superintendent M. Moroney, Firemen A. Collett, R. F. Came, C. Davy, F. Lay, J. O’Halloran, and C. J. Watson. As business places will be closed from Thursday night till Tuesday morning shops will remain open till 8.30 this evening. The Municipal Band will give a concert in the main street, commencing at 7.30. Mr and Mrs A. E. King and the Misses M. and R. King leave early next week'on a visit to England. Mr King’s health has not been satisfactory for some time past, and it is hoped that the sea voyage will set him up again. Mr J. Rawlings has returned to Waipawa from a holiday visit to Auckland.
