JUDCE-ADVOCATE-CENERAL. COLONEL NORTHCROFT CHOSEN. The appointment of LieutenantColonel E. H. Northcroft, D. 5.0., V.D., of Auckland, to the position of Judge-Advocate-General to the New Zealand Military Forces with promotion to the rank of colonel is announced in the current Gazette. He succeeds Mr Justice Reed, who has relinquished his appointment as Judge-Advocate-General, a post he had held since the war years. The appointment is also announced of Lieutenant-Colonel F. L. G. West, V.D., of Auckland, as deputy-Judge-Advocate-General, a position formerly held by Colonel Northcroft. LieutenantColonel West has been legal staff officer attached to the Northern Command and his promotion will necessitate a further appointment. The Judge-Advocate-General deals with legal matters as they affect, the forces, but his duties principally concern courts-martial and courts of inquiry, the decisions of which have to be reviewed by him before being promulgated.
