Lieutenant R. S. Judson, V.C., of the New Zealand Staff Corps, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Mr and Mrs Adam Bell left this morning on a holiday visit to Blenheim. Mr T. G. Davidson, of Hastings, left by the mail train this morning to attend the Orange Lodge Conference at Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. Stickland, of Hastings, left this morning for Putaruru, to attend the wedding of Mr Stickland’s brother. Mrs Guy Rochfort, of Hastings, accompanied by her sister. Miss Coupcr, of Havelock North, left this morning on a holiday visit to Nelson. The Rev. C. N. Lack, superintendent of the Australian and New Zealand China Inland Mission, and the Rev. Conway, secretary of the mission, who have been visiting Hastings, left this morning for Palmerston North. The death occurred in Wellington on Sunday after a long and painful illness of Air W. Mackay, senior partner of the late firm of S. and W. Mackay, booksellers. Air Mackay was a noted chess player.—Press Association. Air J. McEnery, of Port Ahuriri, who has been staying with relatives in Hastings, and Mr J. Walsh, who has been staying with Air P. McCarthy, Tomoana road, left by this morning’s mail train en route to Newcastle, West Limerick, Ireland, which will be their future home. Dr. Matthew A. Hunter, who was educated in Auckland and has had a distinguished career in scientific research in the United States, has been appointed head of the Pensselaer Plytechnic Institute’s department of electric engineering and physicals at Troz, New York.—Press Assn. Private advice has been received in Palmerston North of the death in Denmark on February 21 of Professor Johannes Schmidt, aged 56, who was the leader of the Danish oceanographic research expedition in the vessel Dana, which visited New Zealand in 1928 with scientific leaders, including Dr. Andersen, who has also died since he visited Auckland, Wellington and other centres.
