BOXING

HAWKE’S BAY ASSN.

ANNUAL MEETING HELD. PROFIT ON YEAR'S WORKING. The annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Baring Association was held in the Chamber of Commerce Rooms, Hastings, last evening, Mr D. H. Newbigin presiding o-ver a large attend •nee. Moving the adoption of the annual report (previously published in the "Tribune”), the chairman said that the association had had a very successful year. However, there was need for more interest to be taken in the membership. Ho urged that tho headmasters and parents be asked to encourage the sport among the younger generation. Boxing was an ideal sport for teaching boys and youths tho e»seutials of true sportsmanship, he said, and for this reason it was to be commended to those who are moulding tho lives of the future generation. SELECTION OF REPRESENTATIVES Mr Newbigin said that he was satisfied that in the past the association had not done its best for the matter ot representation at tho New Zealand championships. He thought the policv of picking a representative from the winners of one tournament was not the best method, and ho urged the incoming committee to look into the question •f appointing a set of judges whose task would be to select the best boy out of a number of fights. Other associations studied the boys more than the Hawk's Bay Association, and picked upon a boy for a particular weight. Tn this way they found the best talent available. He commended this scheme to the incoming committee. The report was adopted without discussion. The balance sheet showed a profit of £53 16/3 on the year’s workings. Of the seven contests held only one showed a loss, the profits from them all being £25 111 9. Tho chairman pointed out that during the past season the association had arranged its own seating accommbds tion at a cost of £53 7/-. Had the association followed the procedure adopted in previous years of hiring seating, the expenditure would have been £B5. including the cost of erection. The actual saving for the year had been over £3O. and next season the association would make a total saving of the £53 refunded last year. ELECTION OE OFFICERS.
