HAWKE’S BAY A. & P. SOCIETY

AUTUMN SHOW THURSDAY’S BIG EVENT The rain which has fallen so steadily since Sunday will be welcomed by the farming community, and will no doubt be of great benefit to the pastures. The fact that it commenced so early in the week is taken by many people to be a good augury for the weather conditions for the Hawke’s Bay, Autumn Show on Thursday, as it is generally thought that by that time the rain will have cleared away. It is to be hoped both for the sake of the public an 1 the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society that the day will be a fine one, for if it is a very large attendance may bo anticipated at the show. Looking back upon past autumn shows, successful as they have been, one has to admit that the shows of the present period so far outshine those of the old days in the multiplicity of interesting attractions pro vid -d as to really afford no comparison at all. The shows of to-day are Immeasurably superior to those of the earlier years, and the marked progress the society has made in catering for the public is a striking example of the “Excelsior’’ motto, which has always been theirs. The earlier autumn shows were little more than wonderfully fine displays of fruit, vegetables and flowers, with some fine horse competitions. To-day the fruit section of the show- is as good as ever, the vegetables and horticultural sections better, poultry, homo industries and native industries sections all better, while to the horse competitions have been added dog trials, apple-pack-ing and dancing competitions, while a very fine section for fat stock anl foi cab es has been added, so that it may well be said that for an autumn show the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s fixture is without a superior in the Dominion. The show is well worth patronage for its educational and instructive interest alone, but its manifold interesting competitions make up a programme that should not bo missed. Hot water will be protided free.
