NEW HOCKEY RULES

ADOPTED BY N.Z. BODY. NEXT SEASON’S GAMES. New hockey rules have been drawn up by the International Board and approved by the New Zealand Association. They will apply to New Zealand players during the coming season. The new rules and alterations to the old ones are as.follow: — The number of rules has been reduced from 23 to 20, the new rule number 10 embodying the old rules 12, 13, 14, and 22. The main alterations arc as follow:— 1. Teams and duration of game: The interval shall not exceed five minutes. 2. Captain: No change. 3. Ground: Flag posts to mark the 25 yards lines. 4. Goals, posts, etc.: Goal-boards not exceeding 18 inches high shall be placed at the foot of the goal-nets. 5. Sticking circle: The line shall be three inches wide. 6. Ball: To be composed of white leather or other leather painted white; circumference not to exceed 9j inches or to be less than eight anil thirteensixteenths; weight not more than 5 J ounces or less than 54. 7. Sticks and 8. Boots: No change. 9. Bully: No players shall stand within five yards of the players who arc bullying (the old rule stated three yards); the tapping of sticks must be over the ball; no bully shall be played within five yards of the goal-line. 10. General details: No undercutting either intentional or unintentional; the foot or leg shall not be used to support the stick in order to resist an opponent; hooking of sticks from above not allowed; hooking may only be done by placing the stick between the ground and an opponent’s stick; goal-keeper given time to remove or replace his pads if called upon to take part in a penalty bully. 11. Goal: No change. 12. Off-side: A player who is off-side shall not be penalised for off-side unless he is, by his position, gaining some advantage or influencing the play of an opponent; a player who is in an off-side position shall not be put. onside by reason of the ball having touched or glanced off the stick or person of an opponent. 13. Free hit: No free-hit shall be taken within five yards of a goal post; the ball may be pushed along the ground, but the scoop stroke shall not be permissible in this instance. 14. Roll-in: Not only the feet and stick to be behind the side-line but the hands also. 15. Behind: No change. 16. Corner: No shot at goal (the old rule read “no flying shot”) shall be made from a corner hit unless the ball first be stopped (not necessarily motionless) on the ground by a player of the attacking team, or touch the stick or person of a player of the defending team. 17. Penalty corner: The rule regarding the corner shall also apply to a penalty corner except that the free hit may be taken from any spot on tho defenders’ goal-line on either side of the goal, but not. within ten yards of a goal-post. This allows the penalty corner to be taken within three yards of the corner flag on the. side-line. 18. Penalty bully: The old rule stated that a penalty bully had to be given for every intentional breach of a rule and for an unintentional breach which hindered the probable scoring of a goal. The new rule states: A penalty bully shall be awarded if there has been an intentional breach of Rule 10 (General Details) inside the circle, by a player of the defending team, to prevent a goal being scored; or a goal would probably have been scored hail :in unintentional breach of Rule 10 inside the circle not occurred; the bully shall he played on a spot live yards in l front of the centre of the goal-line. 19. Umpires: There shall be two umpires. 20. Accidents: The old rule stated that the game was to be restarted on a spot selected by the umpire “in whose half the accident occurred.” The new rule ends at the word “umpire. ’ ’
