DISTRICT NURSES

KEEN FOR RESEARCH. EAST COAST CONFERENCE. Gisborne, March 13. Although formed only live years ago, th l East Cape health district, extending from Wairoa northwards, is regarded as a standard for the Dominion, and is now being utilised as a training giound for district nurses from other centres. Apart from carrying out their routine duties, the nurses engage in a modi lied scheme of research, each investigating a different aspect of selected problems. An indication of the keenness of the nurses engaged was given last week, when they assembled at Gisborne at their own expense to bold the first conference which district nurses have ever held in New Zealand. The conference wus presided over by Miss M. Lambic, director of the nursing division of the Department of Health, who eulogised the manner in which the district had been organised and |>aid a tribute to the splendid work performed in this connection by 'Dr. H. B. Turbott, district health officer. It was due to the recognised standing of the district that nurses were being sent to this district to undergo training before being sent to other parts of the Dominion. So successful was last week's conference from every point of view that it is intended to recommend the Health Department to adopt a similar scheme in other districts.
