TWO BURGLARIES
NAPIER PREMISES ENTERED. THIEVES SECURE LOOT OF £7. Last night burglary was committed in two different places in Napier, the premises of Player Bros., wood and coal merchants, Thackeray street, and the temporary premises of the South British Insurance Coy. in the Club ■ample rooms. Herschel! street, being entered. Both premises were burgled some time ago. Entry was evidently made into Player Bios.’ office last night by for< mg the front door and a small safe eontaining the firm's ledgers and cash books besides some cash was removed. It is evident that the intruders had the use of a motor-ear as the safe was this morning found abandoned on the roadside half-way between Meeanee and Awatoto. It was discovered by a passer-by, who reported the matter to Constable Gartley. of Taradale. The whole of the bottom of the safe, which consisted of a thin layer of sheet m tai. had been cut out by an axe. which has also been recovered. It is understood that £7 in notes was removed, but 11/- in silver in a small drawer escaped the notice of those engaged in rifling the cafe. The books in the safe were not interfered with, but owing to the rain last night some of them were slightly damaged. The •afe was not a heavy one and could have been handled by two men. In the case of the raid upon the temporary premises of the South British Insurance Company, the back door was forced open. The office was ransacked hut the intruders gained no re«ard in the form of cash. They, however, took two overcoats hanging in one of the rooms and a few keys that would be of no use to anyone. The police are investigating both ■m <ters.
