GAMES IN HAWKE’S BAY OLD BOYS DEFEAT HASTINGS. TOMOANA AGAIN VICTORIOUS. The third round of the Hastings senior grade competition was brought to a close on Saturday, when several good individual scores were recorded in both matches. At Cornwall Park, Tomoana narrowly missed securing an outright win over Whakatu, who were obliged to followon after making 111 in reply to Tomoana’s score of 328. At the end of the day Whakatu were still behind, but the last-wicket partnership was unbroken. Ou the Nelson Park wicket, Hastings failed to overtake Uld Boys’ modest score of 182, aud the match was played ■to a finish, resulting in a four-point win fur Old Boys by 114 runs. WHAKATU Whakatu set abqut their reply to the 328 knocked up the previous week by Tomoana, An indifferent opening was not improved upon by the succeeding batsmen and only three gained double figures. Fisher headed the list with 43 which included six fours and was a valuable innings. A follow-on was ordered and this time Whakatu made a better showing but they were hard put to in staving off outright defeat. A. last-wicket partnership by Craike and Flynn saved Whakatu the extra point by being unbeaten at the drawing of stumps after putting on over 30 runs to bring the total to 209. Gray was in form with the ball and tool: eight wiekets for 16 runs. Tomoana fared even worse with the bat and were dismissed for 44, Corlett contributing 17 and Curry 10. McKenzie collected seven wickets for 17 runs and Wilkins three for 27. Fruitworkers declared their second innings closed at 55 for three wickets, Wilkins being not out for 24. Corlett took all three wickets for 33 runs. Requiring 95 runs to win Tomoana made a good effort but failed, the innings realising 72 runs, of which Mollison made 24 and Curry 13. The McKenzie family quickly closed the innings, J. McKenzie doing the hat trick. PICNICKERS v. TWLFOED. A friendly game between the Hastings Picnic Club and Twyford was played at the polo grounds during the week-end and resulted in a win for the Picnickers by four wiekets. Batting first Twyford made 71 runs, Jarvis 29. Pindar 11, Bexley 10. Goodall took four wickets for four runs, H. Love three for nine, Ross two for 16 and Stenson two for 15. In reply the Picnickers made 110. H. Love contributing 3.1, Jonson 18, Ross 18 and McKenzie 17. Jarvis captured four wiekets for 17 runs and Bexleyfour for 45. In their second effort Twyford made 66 runs, Jarvis being the only batsman to make double figures, his score being 24 not out. Love three for none, Clarke two for six and Beale two for 11 were the best bowling averages. The Picnickers knocked up the required runs for the loss of six wiekets, Stenson making 20 and Goodall 11 not out. Carrington took three wickets for 12 runs. NAPIER GAMES TECHNICAL BEAT ST. JOHN’S. I UNITED SURPRISE H. 5.0.8. There were some good batting performances at Nelson Park on Saturday afternoon, when the*' senior and junior grade cricket competitions were resumed. The best senior display was given by Finlayson, who scored 91 tor St. John’s. Amongst the juniors, there were lio less than four three-figure scores. Mathews, of Swailes’, made 149, Gray and Jeffery, of the same club, 116 and 100 respectively, and Pell, of Seinde, 102. The team scored 192, of which Younghusband made 51, Palmer 34, Bickerstaffi 21 and Mahony 17. United A replied with 109, the best scores being gained by Nelson and Seed. ST. JOHN’S GOOD START. St. John’s have made a good start against Technical Colts. Butting first they made 268, while they have captured live of the Colts’ wickets for 90. The best batting display for St. John’s was given by Thorne-George, who made 68. N. Triggs made 46, King 42, Mori 32 and Ready 2-1. SWAILES 483 FOR NINE. Swailes’ have placed themselves in an invincible position against United B by scoring 483 for the loss of nine wickets. There were three centuries. Jeffery made 100 (two fives and eight fours), Gray 116 (21 fours), and Mathews 140 (two sixes, one live and 21 fours). Others to score double figures were Swailes 52, Macfarlane 13 and Willis 12. United’s bowling analysis will be published at the completion of Swailes? innings.

TECHNICAL 0.8. v. H. 5.0.8. In their first innings against Technical 0.8., H. 5.0.8. made 168. Griffin made 93 (one five and 12 fours), Cos 15 and Lash 10. For Technical, Tate took five wickets for 59, Grouden four for 30 and Rees one for 13. Technical 0.8. had scored 166 for the loss of seven wickets when stumps were drawn. Rees made 77 (one five and 11 fours), while Marcroft scored 18 and Oswell 32. FLAXMERE V, WESTSHORE. Flaxmere and Westshore played a cricket match at the Polo Grounds during the week-end, the former team winning by an innings and three runs. Westshore in the first innings made 52 (Beswiek 17, F. Watson 10), and Flaxmere replied with 175 (A. Johnson 90, C. Campbell 19, C. Arthur 19, E. Craven 16). Westshore’s second innings totalled 120, their gross score being three Jess than Flaxmere’s. FORMER WIN BY 42 RUNS The weather was again ideal on Saturday for the continuation of the match between the first elevens of the Dannevirke and Hastings High Schools. Resuming play for Dannevirke, Hill and Craven took the score from 62 to 122 before being separated. The side was eventually dismissed for a total of 187. Hastings thus required 162 to win, but with the exception of Caldwell, Waymouth. HASTINGS 2nd XI. v. WAIPAWA On Saturday afternoon the Waipawa High School Ist XI. visited Hastings and played a match against the Hastings 2nd XI. Considering that only three hours were available for play the performances were very creditable, over 300 runs being scored. The home side batted first and, due mainly to a magnificent stand by Edwards, who was responsible for 108 (17 fours), and in a lesser degree to Hutchinson (19), were able to put up the good total of 156 in 90 minutes. For Waipawa, Knoblock took four for 32, Weston two for 23 and Logan two for Waipawa’s wickets fell quickly until seven were down for 84 and Hastings’ prospects were very bright. However Bibby and Edwards became associated and between them were able to make up the necessary runs to obtain a win. Bibby (56) then retired, but the innings closed immediately afterwards with the total at 158. The other principal scorers were Knobloek 33, Edwards 27 and Robertson 12. Bowling for Hastings, Taffe took two for 30 and Hutchinson three for 28. The visitors, who were accompaniel by Mr J. Lackliart, were entertained to afternoon tea before leaving for home by rhe afternoon train.
