DRASTIC CUTS NECESSARY. IF INDUSTRY IS TO SURVIVE. (Received 9, 10.40 a.m.) Hollywood (California), March 8. The cessation of activities at all motion picture studios in Hollywood was ordered to-day by the Association of Motion Picture Producers unless drastic cuts in salaries and wages for the eight-week period, due to the banking situation, are taken by all employees and artists. The board of directors of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences, shortly after the ultimatum, recommend that its members should take the reductions. For salaries of more than 50 dollars a week a cut of 50 per cent, for the
eight-week period will be made with a minimum of 37} dollars. Those earning less than 50 dollars take a 25 per cent, cut with a minimum of 15 dollars. The cuts are retrospective, starting from March 6. “The studios can no longer exist unless substantial cuts jn pay are made,” said the spokesmen for the producers. The studios will remain open pending action by the employees regarding the reductions. OFFICES AND EXCHANGES EFFECTED. (Received 9. 2.50 p.m.) New York, March 8. It was learned definitely to-day members of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America put into effect an immediate cut of from 25 to 50 per cent, on the salaries of all workers in the New York office and various exchanges throughout the United States.
