HIKURANGI MINE
WORK RESUMES. MEN TAKE CONTROL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Whangarei, March 6. A week ago the Hikurangi Coal Coy. declined an offer by the miners to accept a 20 per cent, reduction in wages, and handed the mine over to Scott Davidson to work on a contract basis. Subsequently the Miners’ Union withdrew the safety men, with the result that the mine was in danger of flooding. Hie company appealed to the union to restore the safety men, which was agreed to provided the directors again meet the miners and withdraw Scott Davidson. In the meantime, the conditions were accepted and the safety men returned. At a conference yesterday the directors’ proposal that the men take control and pay all working expenses and 2/6 a ton royalty on all coal sold was accepted. The men rejected an alternative proposal that the union take charge of the mine, the company paying 14/6 a ton for coal produced on the surface. Work resumed at midnight on Sunday and it is expected that 123 men will be employed tomorrow.
