ORATORY'S ST. LEGER. VEILMOND A WINNER. Melbourne, March 5. After a sultry morning heavy rain fell at Flemington. The attendance was good. Phocis led always in the Hurdles and won comfortably. The rider, Fullarton, won the National Hurdles on Polygonum. The New Zealander, Tucker, rode Dark Dawn. There was a sensation at the start 01. the Sires’ Produce, the favourite, Maid of Orleans, being left at the post. Limareh had every chance. Maid of Orleans has the unique record of six starts, four wins and a left at the post in each unplaced effort at Flemington. Veilmond had a comfortable victory in the Essendon Stakes. His rider, Pike, has won the event previously on The Hawk, twice on I’har Lap, Amounis and Pendil. Veilmond is trained by the former New Zealander, George Price. There was a great finish in the Newmarket Handicap. The placed horses were prominent throughout. Winooka finished fast and was fourth. Closing Time appeared to lead early, but tired over the last furlong. • Waltzing Lily was despised as a yearling and cost only 60 guineas. She is held on lease, the present lessee-trainer being S. Smith. She is one of the smartest fillies seen out in recent years and won the Standish Handicap at Flemington on New Year’s Day. The rider, J. O’Brien, won the Australian Cup on Sea Money. There was a thrilling contest for the St. Leger. The pacemaker, Oratory, was passed at the distance by Metallurgy, but came again and won in the last stride. Eastern Chief made a good effort. Gaine Carrington was fifth. Oratory’s owner, Mr Sol Green, and the trainer, Lou Robertson, won the St. Leger previously with Strephon. Oratory was handicapped at 7.4 in the Australian Cup but now has to carry weight f -r age, 8.0. Lord Whittier led always in the Brunswick Stakes. He has 6.11 in the Cup. It was his rider, W. Sterling’s, first win at Flemington. Results:— Pines Hurdle. —Phocis (.10.10) 1. Dark Dawn (10.5) 2. Hayward (9.13) 3. Eight starters. Won by three and a half lengths, third three-quarters of :i length back. Woodlace was fourth Time, 3.44. Sires’ Produce Stakes. —Lelite (A. Knox) 1, Heroic Lass (W. Duncan) 2, Shakuni (E. Baxter) 2. Eleven starters. Won by two and a half lengths, third a head back. Limareh was fourth. Time, 1.261. Essendon Stakes. — Veilmond (J. Pike) I, Cimbrian (Bracken) 2, Topical (Knox) 3. Nino starters. Won by three quarters of a length; third a neck back. Rulanut was fourth. Time, 2.6’,. Newmarket Handicap. — Waltzing Lily (J. O’Brien) 1. Jacko (11. Skidmore) 2, Ibrani (E. Wright) 3.
