Luck Deserted Him.

Phenomenal success attended the riding efforts of the light-weight jockey A. H. Eastwood at the New Zealand Cup Meeting at Riccarton last month, but his luck has deserted him at the Auckland Cup carnival at Ellerslie, and it is doubtful .whether he_will ride again at the meeting. He was out of action and getting about with the aid ot crutches on Tuesday as the result of the foot injury he received when his mount, Berate, was forced on the rails in tho first rare on Monday. In spite of the painful nature of his injury, uhich is a broken toe. Eastwood rode in subsequent races, but was unable to place his foot on the ground after being beaten on Silver Scorn in the last event. As there were no conveyances available to take him off the course at the moment, Mr G. MurrayAynsley. the Riccnfton owner-trainer, solved the problem by giving him a pick-a-back.
