Owing to a strong current, several bathers got m difficulties at Sumner yesterday „ In one case there was a thrilling rescue. Mrs Fox and Miss Peggy Fisher nere swimming together. They were some distance from the beach when Miss Fisher saw that Mrs Fox was almost exhausted. Miss Ficher supporter her for a period and then called to J. E. Archer, who was not far away. Archer swam over and while he held up Mrs Fox Mis's Fisher set out for shore to bring iuJp. A Surf Club team duslied in and eventually brought Mrs Fox out, but only after the beltman and the woman had been badly buffeted by the surf at the end of a 400 yards line and frequently submerged. I.ARM-HAND DROWNED. By Telegin ph—Press Association. Hamilton, Dec. 19. A farm-hand, Herbert Vallilley, aged 19 years, was drowned in Kiinijii Lake, two mites from Huntly, after a rescue attempted by a 16 ycar-old companion, James Rye, had failed. The deceased was diving from a boat when he collapsed. He struggled violently with Rye, who was forced to release him when in an exhausted condition.
