CARGO LOADING

DEMONSTRATION AT THE BREAKWATER.

LIGHTERS TO HAVE A TEST.

Messrs. Richardson and Co. are to be requested by the Napier Harbour Board to carry out a demonstration of handling cargo at the Breakwater from lighters, as suggested by the wharfinger, in conjunction with the board’s engineer, the Harbourmaster and the works committee of the board.

In moving that correspondence from Richardson and Co. and a report from the wharfinger on the matter be received, the chairman, Mr. T. M. Geddis, at the meeting this morning, suggested that the lightering company be requested to carry out a demonstration as suggested by the wharfinger. Mr. A. E. Jull, M.P., pointed out that the wharfinger had suggested that vehicles should load cargo from the ship’s side, which was something totally opposed to any recommendation made by the board’s officials to the board. He was of the opinion that such a prtfctice would, greatly impede the railway service and slow up the work. He would not say that the proposed loading could not be done, but it would only be at an enormous waste of time. When vessels were discharging into trucks the bringing of vehicles onto the wharf would entail great difficulty. Mr. P. Higgins was confident that the wharfinger had considered every possible aspect when making his recommendation. He could not remember any official of the board being asked for sueh a report. He had personally heard them say that vehicles could be worked on the wharf.

Mr. J. C. Bryant considered that a small committee should be appomieo to deal with shipping matters. He was afraid that there was far too much letter writing by both sides. The chairman’s motion was then agreed to.
