HASTINGS CARNIVAL

WORK OF THE EXECUTIVE MANY DETAILS COMPLETED. SUPPORT or BETAILERS. The weekly meeting of the Hastings Carnival Executive was held last evening, and was presided over by His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. F. Roach). Fifteen other members, inclnding Mrs W. G. Stead and Mrs W. Richmond, and Messrs F. S. Bndd (organising secretary) and J. Le Compte (assistant organiser) were present. Mr Budd reported that the local organisation of commercial travellers had expressed their willingness to give all possible help on the Wednesday and Thursday of Carnival Week. On the Wednesday they would run a mock court, and on the Thursday would give whatever assistance might be required a* the Fete Day on the racecourse. They would, for example, manage any side-shows that might be arranged. The advisability of having professional side-shows was discussed at considerable length, and Mr A. F. Bedgrave moved, and Mr G. McCormick seconded, that the engagement of pro-fessionally-owned side-shows should not he entertained, especially in view of the fact that the Carnival Committee’s aim was to keep money in the town. Mr Le Comte pointed out that sideshows could not be run nearly so successfully by amateurs as by professionals, and that it would be difficult to obtain the services of amateurs who would pay as much attention' to sideshows as would be given by professionals. Further, they would have to spend some time in the district and would also spend much of their money here. Mr G. F. Boach said that last year the rental from professional sideshows returned £B7, and Mr F. J. Hull said that the rental would be paid “rain, hail, or snow,” and that business men could not take time off to run side-shows. Mr Bedgrave altered his motion to the effect that professional side-shows should not be engaged unless a sufficient number of amateur side-shows could not be arranged. Mr Gordon Boach suggested that the matter of entertainments should be left to the committee specially appointed to deal with entertainments. It was ultimately decided on the motion of Mrs W. Bichmond to adopt the report in which the Entertainments Committee recommended the engagement of professional side-shows. Bates from Lloyd’s for insurance against loss from wet weather were quoted, and on the motion of Mr H. W. C. Baird it was resolved not to insure Mr H. A. Mossman wrote on behalf of a recent special meeting of the Hastings Retailers’ Association, and stated that the association would urge the general acceptance of the proposal that all business people and their staffs should wear fancy dress from 1 p.m. on the Wednesday of Carnival Week. The association was heartily in favour of the carnival, and would give every possible measure of assistance. Further, they would give all the help required in organising the proposed tug-*’-war in Heretaunga street between East and West businessmen.—lt was resolved to thank the association for their letter, and to accept their offer of assistance in organising the East and West tug-o’-A most helpful letter containing many useful suggestions was received from the organising-secretary of the carnival recently held in Hawera, and It was decided to thank the writer of the letter and to refer his suggestions to the Entertainments Committee.
